Workshops - Plein Air Painting in Ontario

Plein Air Painting Workshop with Ian Roberts
July 4-8, 2011 - A five-day workshop in Meaford, Ontario

Meaford sits two and a half hours north of Toronto on Georgian Bay, part of the Great Lakes. The Big Head River valley stretches out behind Meaford, meandering through the farms and woods of the Niagara Escarpent, a UNESCO Biosphere site.

We will paint this beautiful landscape for five days. On day one Ian will introduce three gradated exercises that will help you find the colors of the landscape around you accurately and "see" in color shapes. This essential skill shifts your awareness from subject driven to design driven landscapes. (See the article from American Artist.)

Each morning and afternoon session will be an opportunity to work on a new painting. Ten in all. That way all aspects of the plein air painting process will be explored session by session— framing and cropping, creating strong dynamic compositions with dramatic value masses, working and making decisions quickly and accurately, and knowing when to stop.

These five days will give you the tools and experience to work on at home for months. It will dramatically improve your painting.

Maximum number of students: 12
